PINGAT JASA MALAYSIA MEDAL
Posted: 30th November 2011
Previous rulings on the wearing of the Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal were confusing. Australia & New Zealand permitted its wear on serving soldiers whist the UK restricted its wear with uniform. Retired persons could do as they wished. The UK has changed its mind, some might say because there are perhaps no serving personnel left who served during the Malayan Emergency and/or the Borneo Confrontation and it’s in theatre training.
Consequently the PJM Medal may now be worn by all who qualify in recognition of the wish of the King of Malaysia to award this medal in recognition of service given by many veterans in the years up to and following Malaysian Independence. The pin striped bean counters have retreated. If you have one, now you can wear it with pride.

REDEVELOPMENT PLANS
Posted: 14th October 2011
The Trustees of the Green Howards museum are currently consulting on initial plans for the redevelopment of the museum. The Trustees feel that it is the right time to relook at how the collection is displayed to ensure that the museum continues to meet the needs of future users.
The plans for the museum can be seen by clicking on ‘VIEW MORE PICTURES’. The plans have been developed to give an idea about how the museum might look but they are very much initial ideas.
We wish to ensure that everyone has the chance to comment on the plans and to help shape the future look of the museum.
Initially we are requesting that people complete our ON-LINE SURVEY.
We are also looking for people to join our museum development panel. If you would be interested in joining this panel please email the Director Lynda Powell director@greenhowards.org.uk . The Director will shortly be getting in touch with Branch Secretaries to arrange to come and talk to branches in the New Year and get members views on the redevelopment plans.
The development is likely to cost £900,000 and will be funded through applications to funding bodies including the Heritage Lottery Fund and through our own fundraising efforts.
If you would like to make a contribution towards the redevelopment of the museum please contact the Director Lynda Powell 01748 826561 or send your donation to Green Howards Museum, Trinity Church Sq, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 4QN
ALLIED ADVANCE FROM D DAY - VE DAY
Posted: 3rd February 2011
To whom it may concern,
My name is Justin Rickett, I’m writing from a television production company called Impossible Pictures. We’re producing a 6 part documentary series on the Second World War for Channel 4 and Canadian History TV. The series is looking at campaigns in North West Europe during the last year of the war, so the allied advance from D Day VE Day. Specific areas that we’re looking at are the Falaise Gap, Ardennes, Crossing the Rhine. We’re trying to track down veterans from these campaigns that might be willing to talk to us, do you know of any in the Green Howards Association?
It would initially require a telephone conversation and then potentially an interview with a camera crew.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Justin

Impossible Pictures is making a 6-part series for Channel 4 and the History Television Channel in Canada that aims to tell the story of the last year of the Second World War, detailing the battles and stories from D-Day to Berlin. We will be combining interviews with veterans, archive footage and a forensic visual analysis using specialist cameras of some of the weapons used. Our aim at all times is to pay tribute to these war heroes - the powerful backbone to the series will be their individual stories. We are looking for British, American and Canadian veterans who were involved in D-Day and the many operations and campaigns that followed until the end of the war. We are already in touch with a number of people who will be taking part but we would still like to hear from more veterans so that we can build a good picture of D-Day and beyond.
THE ELIZABETH CROSS
Posted: 24th August 2009
The Elizabeth Cross
You will have seen in the press that the Queen is to honour the families of Service people who died in action with the Elizabeth Cross. This is a splendid development and great credit is due to all those involved in MOD and elsewhere. In the announcement the Queen said "I greatly hope that the Elizabeth Cross will give further meaning to the nation's debt of gratitude to the families and loved ones of those who have died in the service of our country". The next of kin of over 8000 Service people who have been killed since 1948 will be eligible to receive the award. At the time of writing more than 400 Crosses have already been issued. For information and an application form call the medal Office Tel: 0800 0853600.

BIG salutes veteran WWII heroes with commemorative funding.
Second World War veterans across the country can today sign up for a new multi-million pound commemorative funding scheme that will provide Lottery support for anniversary trips to the places where they saw action.
The Big Lottery Fund has today announced the opening of its funding initiative, Heroes Return 2, pledging funding for veterans, spouses, widows and carers wishing to mark overseas anniversaries throughout 2009 and 2010.
Sir Clive Booth, Chair of the Big Lottery Fund said: “The generation of men and women who served this country during the Second World War gave so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. As they get older, pilgrimages to the areas where they saw service become ever more poignant and precious to our veterans.
“Today’s Heroes Return 2 funding announcement builds on the Fund’s previous support for our veterans. We were proud that we were able to contribute to events marking the 60th anniversary leading up to the end of the Second World War - including helping 39,000 veterans and their carers go overseas to revisit those sites where they saw action.
“This is why I am personally delighted today to announce the launch of Heroes Return 2, making a further offer to fund the trips for those veterans who would like our support to attend anniversary events across the world. In this way, we hope to do our bit on behalf of the whole nation to honour the service and sacrifice so many of our veterans made.”
The Fund has opened up a Heroes Return 2 hotline for all veterans to ring for further information: Heroes Return 2 Helpline 0845 00 00 121. Hundreds have already registered their interest.
Pat White National Chair of the Italy Star Association said: “We are delighted that the Big Lottery Fund have given us another opportunity for more of our veterans, some who have not had a chance to visit their areas of combat, to return and bury their nightmares.”
Pat White continued: “The first time I entered a Commonwealth war grave cemetery it felt as if I was entering a different world, so calm and peaceful: when you walk in peaceful lanes so green, remember them and think what might have been. We do remember them.”
The Big Lottery Fund has already supported veterans through the Awards for All small grants programme with funding over £178,000 to support anniversary trips this year.
Launched to mark the historic 60th anniversary of D-DAY in 2004, BIG’s former Heroes Return scheme awarded £16.6 million to over 39 thousand veterans, spouses, widows and carers to fund commemorative visits to Second World War battlefields, cemeteries and other significant places across the world.
Heroes Return was the centre-piece of the Veterans Reunited programme including Home Front Recall which awarded £19.2 million to support UK-based group events and activities to commemorate those who contributed to the war-effort on the home front, and Their Past Your Future with an ongoing £9.6 million scheme funding a UK-wide schools and education programme to give young people the opportunity to learn first-hand from veterans about their experience of war.

OBITUARIES/INFORMATION FOR THE NEXT GH MAGAZINE
Posted: 2nd December 2008
The next edition of the Green Howard Magazine will be published in the New Year and will contain some obituaries of those Green Howards who have passed away in recent months.
Inevitably we don't know all who have died nor do we know all we should about them. If anybody knows of a Green Howard who has died please let the Obituary Editor (Roddy Bailey) know. In particular, if anybody knows any pertinent information/recollections or memory that should be recorded for posterity in our Regimental magazine please send it by email - Roddy Bailey's email address is roderic2@eircom.net - or in manuscript to RHQ who will pass it on to me.
Any contributions, no matter how small, by 1 Jan 09 please.
