Two diaries kept by serving soldiers during the BOER WAR (1899 - 1902) have been transcribed and are now placed on this Web site.   The original diaries are in the possession of the Green Howards Museum.

  • The Diary of Private John Jackson describes the service life of an ordinary soldier during the Boer War from October 1899 until September 1900. Private Jackson fought with the Green Howards in South Africa.

  • Corporal F.W.Schofield maintained a diary covering his service between 1899 and 1901.   This diary includes accounts both of the daily life of a soldier at the time, and of the battles fought by the Green Howards in the war.
  • Additonally, the Green Howards website has also been granted permission to host the Diary of Kenneth Taylor which was written between June and December 1944. This describes service in the 6th Battalion from D-Day through to action in Belgium and Germany by Captain Taylor. We are privileged to be able to host this diary, as it provides an extraordinary account of service with the Green Howards in that period of history.
