THE GREEN HOWARDS ASSOCIATION CENTENARY THE GREEN HOWARDS ASSOCIATION CENTENARY 1909 - 2009 On ALMA DAY, 1909, the first meeting of the Green Howards' Association was held in the Army Temperance Room at Fulford Barracks, York. The suggestion to form within the Regiment a veteran's association for the purpose of bringing together past and present NCOs and men once a year, and so promote and foster that esprit-de-corps and good feeling for which the 19th had long been noted, was made by Lieutenant Colonel A de S Hadow when he responded to the toast of the 2nd Battalion, whose officers were the guests of the Regimental Dinner Club at the Ritz Hotel, London, on the 5th March 1909. He hoped it would be possible to form such an association and that members would assemble at York for the first annual dinner that year as guests of the 2nd Battalion to commemorate its return after 19 years foreign service. The suggestion was very favourably received throughout the Regiment and the formation of th4 Association went on apace, and in a short time the organisation had been completed as follows: Major General W E Franklyn CB, Colonel of the Regiment was elected the first President of The Green Howards' Association. The Vice Presidents were the Officers Commanding the 1st and 2nd Battalions and the Depot. The first Executive Committee consisted of Lieutenant Colonel A de S Hadow as Chairman, Major G Christian DSO as Treasurer, Sergeant Major W T Howes as Honorary Secretary, and one representative (not an officer) of each battalion and the Depot.
