A full coach load of of members and friends of the 2nd Battalion Association enjoyed a week long tour of the First and Second World War Battlefields between the 20 and 27 June 2007. The Tour was organised by Tom Heron, and was led by Major George Riordan. The tour group was exceptionally lucky to have George Riordan guiding them, as he provided a superb commentary throughout the tour. His knowledge of the Battlefields is second-to-none, and he made sure that the group was able to see and experience aspects of the Battlefields which made the whole experieince unique. The tour group landed at Ouistreham, near Caen, after an overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth. The first day was spent looking at apects of the American D-Day landings, - taking in St. Mere Eglise, Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Utah Beach and the American National Cemetery at Utah Beach. On the second day the tour visited Pegasus Bridge, and the D-Day beaches of Sword, Juno and Gold. Dickie Bowen gave a marvellous presentation of the part that he had played in the D-Day landings, and it was a privilege to be able to hear his story first hand. After calling at the Green Howards "tram stop" at Mont Fleury, the party move don to Crepon where a Wreath was laid by Major Bill Laws. On the following two days the tour moved on to sites associated with the Battle of the Somme, including the Australian National memorial at Villers Bretonneux, Heilly Station Cemetery, the Lochnagar Crater, Dartmoor Cemetery, Fricourt Cemetery, the Newfoundland Memorial, and the Thiepval Monument. Jack Haines laid a Wreath at the Memorial to Donald Bell, VC, at Bell's redoubt. The final two days were spent in the Ypres area. The group visited the Canadian National Memorial on Vimy Ridge, where a group photo was hurriedly taken in very windy and showery conditions. Other visits included the Berks Cemetery Extension, where one of the youngest members of the Yorkshire Regiment (Francis John Page, aged 16) is commemorated, the Irish Tower on Messines Ridge, the Hooge Crater Museum, and Tyne Cot Cemetery. The tour ended with the group taking part in the very moving ceremony
at the Ypres Menin Gate. The 4 Standard Bearers, the three Veterans (who
laid the wreath), and Major George Riordan who gave the Exhortation, represented
the Green Howards Association at the ceremony. The Last Post was played
by men from the Ypres Fire Service, - who voluntarily play a part in this
ceremony every day of the year at 8.00 p.m. |
