On Sunday the 26 March the 2nd Battalion Branch held its quarterly meeting at Eden Camp, Malton. Some 80 plus members and wives attended. The meeting had a special significance,
being the nearest date to the placing of the 2nd Battalion into "Suspended
Animation" on 30th of April 1956, almot exactly 50 years ago. Following the business of the meeting to mark the passing of our old Battalion, the Very Rev Bishop of Selby Glifford Barker gave a short talk about his service in India at the end of the Second World War with the 2nd Battalion. He was followed by Major Charles Conway who spoke of his service in the Indian Army before joining the 2nd Battalion in Khartoum prior to its absorption into the 1st Battalion. He concluded by recalling the 2nd Battalion 1952 /56 in which most members in the room had served. As a special momento of the occasion each member present was given a GH tie with a 2nd Battalion motif on it. The ladies present were given a Headscarf in Regimental colours with the GH Badge on it. All with the compliments of our generous Chairman, Stan Johnson. He had also laid on a splendid Buffet which was enjoyed by all present. After the Buffet Tom Sivell was presented with an Elephant statue( he saves them) and photos including some of the Stations in which he served (courtesy of the Regimental Museum). He was able to cut a beautiful Birthday Cake provided by Mrs Keld and each member was given a portion. So ended a memorable occasion. |
