On Friday 23rd March 2007 a commemorative plaque inlaid on a plinth of Yorkstone stone was erected on the 10th tee at Catterick Golf Course.

The plaque has been presented in memoriam of The Green Howards Golf Society (GHGS) and Mr Fred Daly MBE (UK Ryder Cup Team 1947-49-51-53) President of the GHGS 1988-1991 and who sited the 10th Tee Box where the white and yellow Tee Boxes stand today. Members of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards whilst stationed in Catterick Garrison subsequently built the 10th Tee box.

The idea for the commemoration was put to the Green Howards Association Golf Society (GHAGS) at the last meeting in September 2006 and from there the idea manifested itself into a remarkable piece of stone masonry and brass work (see photographs, better still play the course) The plaque is made out of brass and lacquered so as to weather. The plaque was engraved and prepared by the workshops in the Garrison. The plinth and base are made from the finest Yorkstone stone and in time will harden and they too will weather.

Both the plinth and the base were designed and provided by Mr Mathew (Matty) Hazell who regularly plays at all XIX golf meetings.

The plaque and stone have been placed not on the 10th Tee Box but at the junction of two paths, which when approached from the 9th green, the 10th Tee Box white and yellow tees are to the right and the red (Ladies) Tee Box and Halfway House are to the left. Further to this the Stone has been sited at the apex of a small fir tree plantation which will, in time enhance the site and will ensure that all players must pass by the site and will no doubt read the plaque.

Present at the “Bedding in” were;

Tom Wharton, Eddie Conway, Bob Martin, Mathew (Matty) Hazell and Joe Cawley (Club Captain 2007)

Finally we would like to thank all those who have so far donated to the plaque and stone. The total cost of all three parts, the plaque, plinth and base were exactly £200.00 for change. This is about half the true cost, but due to friends in the right places a good deal was secured.

We have so far received donations of £70.00. Anyone who would like to send a donation please make cheques payable to;

“The Green Howards Association Golf Society”

And post them to’
