Major Roger Chapman has provided a commentary and photos of the reunion. The photos are below the text.
Once more Green Howard veterans travelled from as far and wide as Canada and Cyprus to join 320 old comrades at the TA Centre at Coldyhill Lane in Scarborough for the annual Association Reunion.
Members of 4th Yorkshire Regiment (TA), under Captain Brian Atkinson and WO2 ‘Smudge’ Smith, co-ordinated the event under the expert guidance of Major Bob Martin MBE and Captain Dennis Appleyard from the Area HQ (North) in Richmond. Steve Young again turned the Drill Hall into a centre of nostalgia with green and white silk bunting. The walls were decorated with names of the various postings over the past 50 years and with countless enlarged photographs of the old regular 1st Battalion and 4th/5th Battalion (TA) in stations around the world.
At the AGM it was agreed to hold the Reunion next year at the same venue on 25/26 October 2008, but the ticket may have to rise to £25 to cover the costs of extra duty pay for the TA staff.
GHA Redcar Branch won both the Shooting and Darts cups, whilst Joe Whitaker (Cheshire Branch) won the over 65 years shoot.
Ian Temple (GHA Scarborough Branch) won the Standard Bearers Competition under the beady eye of WO1 (RSM) John Gilpin, 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment.
In bright sunshine, over 100 Old Comrades attended the Church Parade on Sunday 21 October and marched behind the Yorkshire Corps of Drums to attend an excellent service conducted by the Reverend Michael Leigh, with a powerful address by the GHA Chaplain, the Reverend Clive Artley.
Another outstanding reunion was enjoyed by all. So, make a note in your diary
to attend the next one on the weekend 25/26 October 2008!
