Green Howards, - Associated Web Sites

Green Howards Old Pals Web Site Ray Gascoyne's web site which helps members of the Green Howards family keep in touch. With a Guest Book and photos from the past, this web site is extremely popular with ex-Green Howards.
WW1 Remembrance, - the Yorkshire Regiment This website is dedicated to attempting to record something of the men of Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment (the Yorkshires) who fought in the First World War. THis includes the Memorials to, and the graves of, those who fell.
The Queen's York Rangers of Canada. A regiment affiliated to the Green Howards.
The Yorkshire Volunteers. The Yorkshire Volunteers Regimental Association offers membership to all who have served in the Regiment or in the Territorial Army units which were amalgamated to form the Yorkshire Volunteers or in one of the three battalions which succeeded the Regiment.
Re-enactments of battles fought by the Green Howards. An American organisation, based in California, has a Web site that will provide further information on this aspect of the regiment.
The Cleveland Army Cadet Force. - has fourteen Green Howard cadet detachments, and a long and close association with the regiment.   Potential and previous Green Howards are recommended to visit this site.

Green Howards History

WW1 Remembrance, - the Yorkshire Regiment This website is dedicated to attempting to record something of the men of Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment (the Yorkshires) who fought in the First World War. THis includes the Memorials to, and the graves of, those who fell.
The 10th Battalion of the Green Howards in the First World War An account of a soldier who served with the 10th Battalion in the Great War, as told by his son.
Kenneth Robinson's War Memories Ken Robinson served with the Green Howards from 18 January 1940 to 13 January 1946. His memories are presented here.
Kenneth Taylor's War Diary. Patrick Taylor's father, Kenneth Taylor (now 87), was the Signals Officer in the 6th Battalion of Green Howards, in the Allied Expeditionary Force which landed in Normandy in northern France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The Battalion was in the initial early-morning assault on Gold Beach.
Kenneth kept a (more or less) daily diary of his experiences as his unit advanced north-eastwards across France, through Belgium, and eventually reached Nijmegen in Holland on 24 September.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). A Web site which not only provides information about the invaluable work of this organisation, but also includes a database of the names of over 1,500,000 dead from the Commonwealth Armed Forces in both World Wars.   This database may be searched on-line, from the CWGC Web site for the personal details, dates and places of death, and where the individuals are buried or commemorated.

The Great War Magazine (1914-1918) The Great War magazine is published bi-monthly and features the stories, letters, diaries and accounts of those who served during the 1914-1918 war. The magazine was launched in September 2002 and has now established itself as the leading non-academic magazine about the Great War. Sample pages, information and contents details can be found on their web pages.
The Second World War Magazine (1939-1945) The Second World War magazine is published bi-monthly and features the stories, letters, diaries and accounts of those who served during the 1939-1945 war. The magazine was launched in October 2005 as a sister magazine to The Great War and has quickly established itself as the leading non-academic magazine about the Second World War. Miscellaneous

The Northern Ireland Veterans Association. A web site dedicated to all those who have served in Northern Ireland. A comprehensive Roll of Honour is included.
The Palace Barracks Memorial Gardens The Garden in Palace Barracks remembers some of those who have lost their lives in Northern Ireland, The Falkland Islands, Kuwait, August 1990 - July 1991, Iraq 2003 and the United Kingdom. The Roll of Honour for Green Howards killed in Northern Ireland is included here.
The Victoria Cross Iain Stewart has put together an extraordinarily comprehensive Web site dedicated to the holders of the Victoria Cross.   This Web site provides a mass of information, - not only on the holders of the Victoria Cross in each regiment, but also on the museums where these medal holders are honoured.
The George Cross. Terry Hissey and Roger Hebblethwaite have put together a site dedicated to the George Cross, and holders of the George Cross. Comprehensive details of GC holders are provided on this site.
World War 2 Awards A Dutch site (English language, though!) dedicated to World War 2 medals and awards. Several countries are covered, as well as their top awards. All Britsh VC holders of World War 2 are listed, with brief descriptions of the actions involved.
St. Dunstans The web site of the extremely worthwhile organisation, St. Dunstan's, which cares for blind ex-Service Men and Women. This web site is worth visiting to find out something about the organisation, but you may also appreciate some of the links provided to other welfare organisations.

The National Army Museum An essential Web site for anybody interested in anything to do with the Army.  
This site not only provides a mass of information, but also connects to sites for the Imperial War Museum and the British Army itself.
The Beck Isle Museum The Beck Isle Museum, Pickering holds several photographs and considerable research and documentation relating to Tom Dresser 'The Yorkshire V.C.'
Army Museums The Army Museums Ogilby Trust has put together a site to help people researching their family histories as to where they can obtain data on the military aspects of a relative's life.   This site not only includes information on where such data may be found (e.g. the Public Records Office, Family Records Centre and so on) but also provides a list, - with information on and links to, every Army Museum in the U.K.
The Second World War Experience Centre. Second World War Experience Centre has been created to save a crucial part of the country's heritage.   Year by year, countless letters, diaries and memories from the Second World War period are disappearing, despite invaluable efforts by national war collections, local history bodies and regimental museums.   The Centre has been set up to help redress this problem.

North East War Memorials Project The North East War memorials Project (NEWMP) aims to record every War Memorial between the River Tweed and the River Tees. The NEWMP is intended to assist the public, Local History Groups and Schools, to learn about and research their neighbourhood War Memorials, and record the results.
