PAUL DANIELS' MEMENTOS GIFTED TO GREEN HOWARDS MUSEUM
6th September 2009

A picture of Paul Daniels performing for troops in Hong Kong has been donated to the Green Howards Regimental Museum, along with a number of other mementoes of the magician and television personality.

Mr. Daniels served with 1st Battalion The Green Howards when called up for national service and was sent on active duty to Hong Kong, where he entertained both British and American troops stationed on the island.  The picture, from 1958, shows him performing a party piece at a social event in the Corporals' Mess, Whitfield Barracks, Kowloon.

The collection was donated by Mr. Michael Smethurst, who served in Hong Kong with the Royal Signals and can be seen in the background of the picture.  It also features a letter from Mr. Daniels inviting Mr. Smethurst to a show at Sunderland in 1985, as well as a programme from the show and a picture of the two meeting again after the performance.
