FRIENDS JUNE LECTURE A GREAT SUCCESS
19th June 2011

Paul Cheall and his partner Liz, with his book on sale in the Museum shop

On Friday the Friends enjoyed listening to the talk by Paul Cheall, editor of the book "Fighting Through From Dunkirk to Hamburg". The book was the story of Bill Cheall, Paul's father, who fought with the 6th Battalion the Green Howards in the Second World War.

The lecture was well attended, and it was a pleasure to be able to welcome several guests who had not previously been to a Museum lecture. Amongst these guests were some relatives of soldiers who had fought alongside Bill Cheall and who are named in the book.

Paul described his father's military career, and provided many illustrations in his talk. Some of these illustrations were highly poignant, helping to describe an enthralling story. One photograph, in particular, certainly had the audience's full attention, - this was the photograph of the car owned by Bill Cheall before the war, and recently discovered in pristine condition and still being used by a vintage car enthusiast 75 years later!

The Friends are extremely grateful to Paul for presenting this talk, and for coming with his partner Liz all the way from Norwich to do so.

The next Friends Lecture

Friday 30 September, “The Green Howards in the WW2 Desert War”

Major Roger Chapman, MBE MA, Former Curator of the Green Howards Museum
