MEDALS BEQUEST TO MUSEUM ![]() The Medals of Major Peter John Howell The Museum has recently received the medals of Major Peter John Howell who sadly passed away in September this year. He had a distinguished career in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany during the Second World War and is regularly mentioned in “The Story of The Green Howards 1939-1945” by Captain W A Synge. As a Lieutenant, during the period 22 to 26 May 1942 in North Africa, he and a fellow officer operated behind German lines reporting enemy movements and any signs of immediate attack. In March 1944 as a Captain he took over command of B Company at Anzio. Major Howell was seriously wounded on 30 April 1945 while commanding A Company after crossing the River Elbe. As a retired officer Major Howell was an ardent supporter of the Green Howards Regiment, a regular committee member and a Trustee. We are very grateful to Mrs Penny Chatfield, daughter of Major Howell, who kindly arranged delivery of the medals.
