Derek Benfield with Patricia Routledge - Hetty Wainthropp TV Series

Derek Benfield born in Bradford 11 March 1926 - Died 10 March 2009.

Derek Benfield was called up to serve with the Green Howards in 1944 and the following year joined the Army Bureau of Current Affairs. In 1946 he was sent to Jerusalem and became an announcer for Forces Broadcasting.

On his return to UK he trained at Rada and featured in many popular TV programmes in 1970s, his first being the BBC serial 'Return to the Lost Planet'. He had various parts in shows such as Emergency Ward Ten, Z Cars, Coronation Street and Rumpole of the Bailey.

His most recent and perhaps most memorable was his role as the husband of Hetty Wainthropp. Mr Benfield also wrote scripts and plays.

Sadly he died on the eve of his 83rd birthday.
