VISIT FROM ANOTHER FAMOUS GREEN HOWARD ![]() Sgt Charlie Wardell (seated) with CSgt Jack Charlton It would seem that there are more famous Green Howards than we first thought. This week we had a visit from ex-Sgt Charlie ‘Spuggy’ Wardell who served in Suez, Malaya and Austria from 1948 to 1953. After leaving the army Charlie still felt the need to travel and joined Billy Smart’s Circus where he became a celebrity clown for many years. He arrived at the museum in an electric buggy with his own specially made number plate and sporting an XIX pendant at the back which he said once belonged to Col Manders, CO 1st Bn. Charlie was accompanied by his life-long friend CSgt Jack Charlton who was a Green Howard from 1949 to 1958, serving in Malaya, Austria and Germany before joining the Northumberland Fusiliers.
